J-Plasma

J-Plasma combines helium plasma with RF energy for cutting, coagulation and ablation of soft tissue in open and laparoscopic surgery. The Precise Open handpieces deliver helium plasma and Cool-Coag energy from one device with a retractable blade, and the APYX-JS3 generator provides J-Plasma, monopolar and bipolar outputs.

Clinical applications

Surgical oncology: dissection, destruction or excision of tissue lesions and tumours
Hepatobiliary and general surgery: liver, pancreas, upper gastrointestinal tract, bowel
Gynaecology: gynaecologic oncology, endometriosis
Thoracic surgery
Cardiac surgery
Orthopaedic surgery
Urology
Plastic surgery

The Power of Three. The Simplicity of One.

J-Plasma handpieces with Cool-Coag technology deliver the precision of helium plasma energy, the power of traditional monopolar coagulation and the efficiency of plasma beam coagulation. This enables thin-layer ablation and dissection and fast coagulation with a single instrument, minimizing instrument exchange so the surgeon can stay focused on the patient and the procedure.

  • J-Plasma energy, cooled with helium: precise, tissue-sparing
  • Monopolar coagulation: precise contact hemostasis
  • Plasma beam coagulation: non-contact 'spray' for wider areas
  • Three distinct energy modalities from one handpiece

A Matter of Energy: cold helium plasma

J-Plasma is an advanced energy modality that combines the unique properties of cold helium plasma with RF energy. The helium plasma focuses the RF energy for greater control of tissue effect, enabling a high level of precision.

  • Ionized helium conducts energy to the tissue
  • Indicated for cutting, coagulation and ablation of soft tissue
  • Precise delivery with minimal spread to adjacent tissue
  • For open and laparoscopic procedures

Introducing Cool-Coag Technology

Cool-Coag technology is fundamentally different from the cold atmospheric plasma on which J-Plasma energy is based: it combines the power of a monopolar coagulation waveform with the cooling flow of helium gas. This allows a single device to be used as a standard monopolar pencil for precise contact hemostasis, and as a non-contact spray, plasma beam coagulation, for wider areas of coagulation and ablation. The result is three distinctly different energy modalities from the same handpiece, increasing the utility and versatility of the J-Plasma system.

  • Monopolar coagulation waveform plus helium cooling
  • Contact hemostasis like a standard monopolar pencil
  • Non-contact plasma beam coagulation for wider areas
  • Blade retracted: controlled ablation and coagulation
  • Blade extended: enhanced precision and cutting

J-Plasma Handpieces and Generator

The handpiece range covers open and laparoscopic surgery. The Precise Open handpiece offers J-Plasma energy and Cool-Coag in a sleek, ergonomic design with a 360° rotating blade, in 4.4 cm and 15 cm lengths. The laparoscopic Precise handpiece (APYX-330BPS) has a 5 mm, 33 cm shaft with a pistol grip and a blade that extends in 2 mm steps. The generator is a 3-in-1 energy source for plasma delivery and monopolar and bipolar energy, which optimizes OR space. Setup is plug and play in under 10 seconds and, unlike laser systems, J-Plasma requires no special training, certification, additional equipment or safety protocols.

  • Precise Open: 4.4 cm or 15 cm, 360° rotating blade
  • Precise laparoscopic (APYX-330BPS): 5 mm x 33 cm, pistol grip
  • Extendable/retractable blade for added versatility
  • 3-in-1 generator: J-Plasma, monopolar, bipolar

Minimal thermal spread: histology on peritoneum

In a thermal effect comparison on peritoneum, J-Plasma cold plasma energy (20% power, 4 L/min) produced a depth of thermal damage of 0.147 mm. Under the conditions shown, a CO2 laser (Superpulse 12 W) produced 0.223 mm, argon beam coagulation (70 W, 4 L/min) 0.449 mm and monopolar (30 W) 0.926 mm. The brochure's comparison of mean width and depth of thermal damage also places J-Plasma below CO2 laser, monopolar, argon beam, bipolar and ultrasonic devices.

  • J-Plasma: 0.147 mm
  • CO2 laser: 0.223 mm
  • Argon beam coagulation: 0.449 mm
  • Monopolar: 0.926 mm

What it does

J-Plasma Precise Open (4.4 and 15 cm) Open surgery handpiece: helium plasma for precise dissection and Cool-Coag for coagulation, with a retractable blade.
J-Plasma Precise Lap (33 cm) 5 mm laparoscopic handpiece with pistol grip; the blade extends in 2 mm steps.
APYX-JS3 generator J-Plasma, monopolar and bipolar energy from one unit.

Benefits

Three forms of energy With Cool-Coag technology, J-Plasma instruments can deliver three distinct forms of energy, increasing the precision and effectiveness of the system.
Contact and non-contact hemostasis A single instrument can be used for contact hemostasis and for non-contact (spray) hemostasis, so the plasma beam can be applied to both limited and extensive bleeding surfaces.
Minimal depth of thermal damage In histology on peritoneum, the depth of thermal damage was 0.147 mm with J-Plasma cold plasma energy (20%, 4 L), compared with 0.926 mm with monopolar energy at 30 W.
Use around sensitive areas Helium plasma concentrates the RF energy for better control of the tissue effect, providing a higher level of precision and minimising unwanted tissue effects, so the surgeon can use the energy on and around very sensitive areas.
Ready in under 10 seconds Once the instrument is connected to the generator, the system operates in less than 10 seconds and requires no preparation or additional equipment for its safe use.
